The Danger of Spiders In Your Home

Regardless of if you have a deathly fear of spiders or not, arachnids are often not a very welcoming guest to be entering your home. While spider webs and nests can make your house just look plain unattractive & dirty, most homeowners should be thinking about the venomous spiders that could be setting up camp where they shouldn’t be.

In Oklahoma, we have almost every common United States spider species popping up in our home when they shouldn’t be. The majority of species that you will encounter throughout your home’s lifetime will most likely NOT be harmful to your family and only attack when threatened. However some species such as the Brown Recluse or Southern Black Widow carry potent and lethal poison that is capable of putting you or your family members in the hospital very quick!

Spiders love to eat almost anything and everything. Seeing these little eight-legged visitors could be a strong sign that your home is infested with other various insects and pests that have been utilized as a consistent diet for household spiders. Many spiders for example tend to feed on the ants, moths, beetles, and flies in areas near windows and doors.

Need more information on what spiders could be crawling around in your home? Take a look below and read up on what to expect from three of the most common types of spiders that could be near you.

House Spiders Near You

Brown Recluse

These spiders are sure to scare almost anybody as they prefer to hide in dark, tight spaces, such as behind shelves and tables, between walls and baseboards, in shoes, bed skirts, mattresses, and buried in piles of laundry.

Bites from Brown Recluses carry powerful venom that eats away at human skin so it is vital for any bitten victims to get medical attention immediately.

Common side effects from this species include body aches/chills, itching, uncomfortable ill-feeling or discomfort, nausea, fever, reddish or purple color circle around the bite, large sores (ulcers) in the area of the bite, and sweating.

  • Length: 1/4 to 1/2 inches long
  • Color: Tan to Dark Brown
  • Reproduction: 150 or more spiderlings a year

Southern Black Widow

Widely known for their painful and potent bites, the Southern Black Widow are one of the few spiders in Oklahoma that are widely accepted as dangerous. These species of widows create homes and nests in wood or stone piles as well as shoes that have not been worn in awhile, generally feeding on flies, moths, crickets, grasshoppers and other arthropods.

If found, it is vital for homeowners to contact a pest control professional as soon as possible.

Did you know the venom from a Black Widow spider is 15x more potent than venom from a rattlesnake?

  • Length: 1.5 inches long
  • Color: Black w/ Red “hourglass” shape on stomach
  • Reproduction: 10 egg sacks (255 spiders each)

Carolina Wolf Spider

While it’s possible to see these arachnids during the day, Caroline Wolf spiders are generally only active during the night and unlike other similar species, prefer to hunt directly (instead of trapping) when finding food such as insects or other small vertebrates.

This type of wolf spider can be found in your windows, doors, garages and basements, usually without a web structure as they prefer to hunt for prey themselves. Carolina Wolf Spiders are almost always docile until they feel directly threatened.

However, bites from this species can be extremely painful and cause symptoms that include red bumps, swelling in the face, sweating, and difficulty breathing.

  • Length: 3/4 to 1 inch long
  • Color: Pale Dark Brown or Black w/ a light brown border
  • reproduction: Approximately 100 or more egg sacs

These spiders are sure to scare almost anybody as they prefer to hide in dark, tight spaces, such as behind shelves and tables, between walls and baseboards, in shoes, bed skirts, mattresses, and buried in piles of laundry.

  • Body aches/chills
  • Itching
  • Nausea
  • Fever

Southern Black Widow Bite

What can easily be considered the most dangerous house spider for any homeowner, Black Widows are notorious for carrying potent venom and a viscous behavior when disturbed.

Dark, small, hard to reach crevice areas in garages, attics, and crawlspaces are popular homes for this spider, making it highly recommended for anyone that sees a Black Widow in their house to call  professional exterminator services immediately.

Black Widow bites eat at the central nervous system and may start with a severe pain, burning, swelling, and redness at the area affected. Healing time for this bite is generally 3-10 days. Common symptoms of Black Widow bites to look out for include:

A bite from the Carolina Wolf spider is not considered dangerous and will generally not require medical attention.

Luckily for homeowners, wolf spiders will almost never bite unless provoked or handled directly, making bites from this species of arachnids much less dangerous than their Black Widow counterparts.

The healing period for many victims lasts up to 10 days, and may show severe symptoms such as:

  • Swelling
  • Itchiness
  • Blistering
  • A rash around the bite
  • Breathing problems

Home treatment for these bites is usually recommend by washing the affected area with soap and water. A cold ice pack can be applied to the bite if itching and swelling are occurring as well.

Spider Signs To Look For In Your Home

  • Webs– An abundance of webs can always act as a strong indicator of spiders in your home. Webs are commonly used as a home structure and insect trap for catching food so finding these is a good place to start.
  • Random Spider Occurrences– Some spider species feed on other various types of spiders that are smaller or weaker and easy to catch. If you begin to notice a surplus of smaller and random spiders in your area, it may be time to consider hiring a professional to take a look at your home.
  • Large Amounts of Flying Insects– Insects and other various vertebrates are the most popular diet for almost any spider in the states. While its not always a guaranteed sign, finding large amounts of flying insects such as moths, wasps, and flies could stand as a sign that your home is a gold mine for local arachnids.
  • Egg Sacs – As scary as they look and sound, eggs sacs from a spider are a surefire way to know if you home is infested or not. Many spiders can produce up to 250 babies in one sitting so if you happen to see these, contact Priority Pest now for a free home consultation.
