What’s Going On This Year:

Starting to notice a little more ticks than usual this year? You’re not alone. In fact, recent reports from multiple sources say Oklahoma is the victim of a dangerous & rising tick population that carries a myriad of diseases and bacteria capable of easily ruining your summer.

Dr. Susan Little, a professor at the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine and lead investigator for the OSU National Tick Rearing Lab, recently published a statement sharing the news to Oklahoma residents in an attempt to warn them of the new phenomenon. Many experts believe the mixture of mild weather this year and plenty of suitable breeding grounds are allowing these tick species to reach substantial peak levels of reproduction. The CDC has also shared studies proving that fatal life conditions caused by tick bites, bacteria & diseases have more than doubled over the past decade

It is normal for tick populations to rise during the months of June, July, and even August, however the recent population surge of ticks mixed with over a 200% infection rate expansion is enough to have health experts in Oklahoma worried.

Local Diseases & Bacteria Rising Substantially

Highly Dangerous & Spread Easily

Two common symptoms caused by these increased bacteria and such are the Rocky Mountain spotted fever and ehrlichiosis, both of which carry dangerous & life-threatening body responses that can lead to an unexpected visit to the ER room.

Owners of outdoor pets have been known to face issues similar to agricultural producers with livestock. Not only do ticks carry illness, but many parasites sap an animal’s blood and energy to feed, making it substantially more vulnerable to other health issues. To make matters even worse, published research has shown Oklahoma as consistently ranking first in the nation when it comes to dog infections by ticks, an award we doubt any state would shoot for!

What You Can Do To Fight Back

Respond With The Right Equipment & Knowledge

Ticks are a common and dangerous home problem for many residents in Oklahoma, but that doesn’t mean you have to be their next victim. Staying on top of useful & important knowledge about ticks will help you and your pets stay safe from those nasty bloodsuckers from here on out. When it comes to keeping ticks away from your home, prevention tips are key!

The best way to avoid and fight back ticks is to prevent them in three categories: clothing, repellent, and environment. Wearing long pants, long-sleeved shirts, a hat, and shoes that completely cover your feet is highly recommended to ensure ticks cannot grab onto the materials and climb their way up into areas you don’t want them.

Applying small amounts of tick repellant spray or an anti-tick wristband are also popular & effective methods of keeping these pests off you and your pets. Finally, try to steer away from environments where ticks thrive, such as tall grass, moist areas, dirt, and rotting trees.
