How To Tell Mice & Rats Apart

|

Spotting a rodent in your home or business raises an immediate question: mouse or rat? It’s not always easy to tell, especially when the only evidence is a few droppings or a gap near the foundation. But the answer matters—mice and rats behave differently, nest differently, and respond to different control methods.

Rather than guessing, we take time to identify which rodent we’re actually dealing with before recommending a plan.

How to Tell Mice and Rats Apart

A trained eye can learn a lot from the evidence rodents leave behind. Dropping size, entry hole diameter, and where those openings appear on the building all point toward one species or the other—though reading those clues accurately without training is harder than it looks. That’s why we assess the full picture at the property before drawing any conclusions.

When you can see the rodent directly, identification becomes much cleaner. Mice and rats differ in their feet and ears, but the tail is the most reliable indicator. If the tail is longer than the body, it’s almost certainly a rat—even a young one. Juveniles can move fast enough to make size judgment unreliable, so the tail-to-body ratio is a more dependable measure than overall appearance alone.

If you’re seeing signs but still aren’t sure what you have, Priority Pest & Mosquito Solutions can help assess the evidence. Call us at (405) 287-2937 with any questions the video doesn’t answer.
