How to Identify Boxelder Bugs

Boxelder bugs (Boisea trivittata) belong to the family Rhopalidae, placing them in the same broad order as stink bugs and cicadas. Adults are about half an inch long, black with distinctive red or orange markings along the edges of their wings. Those wings lie flat and overlap on their backs, forming a recognizable X-shaped pattern.

Young boxelder bugs, called nymphs, start out bright red and darken as they develop into adults. Both stages are commonly found on and around their host trees.

Common host trees include:

Boxelder (the primary host, particularly seed-bearing female trees)
Maple
Ash

Why Boxelder Bugs Become a Problem for Oklahoma City Homes

As temperatures drop each fall, boxelder bugs shift from feeding on tree seeds to finding a warm place to wait out winter. They congregate in large numbers on south- and west-facing walls where the sun heats the surface, then push through any gap they can find: cracks around window frames, gaps in door weatherstripping, openings around utility lines, and damaged siding.

Boxelder bugs don’t bite, sting, or transmit disease, and they’re not known to cause structural damage. The problem is the sheer number of them. Indoors, their droppings can stain walls, curtains, and upholstery, and crushing them releases an unpleasant odor. Bugs that make it inside and can’t find an exit will eventually die, but they don’t reproduce while overwintering indoors, so a swarm that gets in won’t multiply inside your walls.

DIY Boxelder Bug Control vs. Professional Treatment

Store-bought sprays and household methods can knock down bugs you can see indoors, and vacuuming is a reasonable way to clear a room without spreading odor.
